In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Virginia Music Educators Association awarded Marshall a Blue Ribbon, with the criteria being "Superior performance as evidenced by the district festival rating from each of the top performing groups of each ensemble taught at the school (band, choir, and orchestra)."
When not playing music, Marshall band students concentrate on top-notch academics. Marshall High School, part of Fairfax County Public Schools, is an IB World School where, in 2014, 92% of graduates went on to post-secondary education and 20% of graduates earned the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students from all over Fairfax County come to take advanced and technical courses at the Marshall Academy "school within a school."
Instrumental music instruction begins in the fourth grade for strings, and the fifth grade for band, at the elementary schools in the Marshall pyramid. The music offerings at Marshall include two concert bands, jazz band, marching band, percussion ensemble, indoor drumline, flute choir, four orchestral ensembles, five choruses, guitar, piano, and IB music. The music department and auditorium were renovated in 2013, and the new band room is spectacular.
