WHY JOIN BAND?
High School Band is an incredibly unique experience that will enrich your student's education, and is sure to be one of the most meaningful highlights of his or her young life!
The Marshall Band program offers a variety of opportunities for your student to further develop their musical talent and get involved at Marshall High School…and we’d be honored to welcome you into our Marshall Band Family!
Here’s what you need to know about the Magnificent Marshall Band Experience
Concert Band: Students participate in concert band as a class during the school day and will be placed by audition at the end of this school year into Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, or Concert Band for next year. (All Marshall Band percussionists have their own Percussion Ensemble class that is taught by a percussion instructor, and they are assigned by audition at the end of October to perform with a specific band during concert season.) All band students are encouraged to participate in marching band, and students who accept placement in Wind Ensemble are required to participate in marching band unless a Marshall HS fall sport conflict waiver is granted. All band students take part in our annual Tag Day fundraiser in September as well as State-Level Assessment performances in March. Most years, we have an optional spring band trip as well!
Marching Band: Marching Band begins on July 29 and continues through November 1, and it’s a great way to get involved at Marshall, meet new people, and become an integral part of the Marshall Band—right away! By the time school starts, new marchers have made tons of friends across all grade levels—so it’s a great way to enter a new school year! As a group, the Marching Statesmen attend all home varsity football games and several Saturday marching band competitions. And in December of 2025, our marching band students can opt to join us for a band trip to HAWAII to participate in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu! (We’ll have options for parents to join in the band trip fun as well—as a chaperone or just as a tag-along!) Registration for marching band will take place at the end of this school year so that the show can be choreographed early in summer for the number of players we have. No marching experience is needed at all—you will learn everything you need to know in summer marching band camp! *Note: Beginning in late June, Marching Statesmen families will receive The Marshall Mouthpiece weekly email newsletter that will provide you with timely updates on information and scheduling for the upcoming season.
Color Guard: The color guard is an essential piece of the marching band that uses flags, rifles, and sabres along with dance to add visuals to the music played by the band. In competitions, the performance of the color guard is an integral component to the overall score that the band receives. Band students can participate in marching band by choosing to be part of the color guard instead of playing an instrument if they desire. Our amazing coaches will teach and train you on spin technique, movement, and choreography during summer marching band camp and after-school rehearsals! (Non-band students can also participate, so if you have a non-band friend who is interested in joining with you, they are welcome too!) For more information, please contact: [email protected]
Jazz Band: We have a vibrant jazz band at Marshall that rehearses and performs during the spring semester. Participating students can opt to receive transcript credit for this course, as it requires a weekly afterschool rehearsal time commitment. It’s a fun and engaging way to explore a different music genre and expand your musical experience.
Winter Guard: Marshall has a highly-competitive, award-winning winter guard program! Utilizing flags and rifles similar to fall color guard, winter guard takes it up a notch with elaborate costuming, props, and expressive choreography to create a dynamic indoor performance. Participation in band or fall color guard is not required, but band members are encouraged and welcome! Winter Guard rehearses after school and on many Saturdays during late fall and winter months, and competes in several competitions throughout the season.
